Chapter 7: Bridge Contest

"She walked back to him," Gabe said behind me.

I had not heard him come out of the room.

He stood in the corridor in his socks, holding a mug of water he had warmed up in the microwave.

"Yes," I said.

"And you let her."

"Yes."

"Why?"

I turned from the window.

I wanted to put my fist through the cinderblock wall.

"Because if I stop her," I said, "she hates me. And if I don't, she hates herself. I haven't found a third option."

Gabe handed me the mug.

I drank it, and it was just water, and I was grateful for that more than I could say.

"Okay," he said. "Here's what I'm going to do. I'm going to drag you to Engineering Club tonight."

"I don't want to go."

"That's why I'm dragging."

"Gabe."

"The bridge contest is Thursday." He pointed at my chest. "You have a design that made a professor invite you to office hours. You are going to build it. You are going to win. And you are not going to sit in this hallway until you're thirty."

I almost said I would not live to thirty.

Instead I said, "Fine."

"Fine?"

"Fine."

"I'll wear my good glasses," Gabe said, pleased.

On Thursday night the club met in the basement of the engineering building, where forty-one students had spread balsa sticks and glue guns across every table.
