Chapter 10: Thai on the Floor

Wyatt opened his door on Saturday night in gray sweatpants and a Bellmont Crew T-shirt with a hole in the collar, holding a pencil.

He looked at me.

He looked at the stairs behind me.

"How did you get in the building?"

"The man in the bookshop downstairs likes me," I said. "I bought a dictionary."

"Why?"

"So he'd like me."

I walked past him into the apartment before he could close the door.

It was one long room under a slanted ceiling, with brick walls and big old windows over the street.

A rowing machine by the radiator.

Books in towers on the floor, books on every shelf, books on the windowsills.

A long desk by the window, covered in papers.

A bed in the far corner, neatly made, which I did not look at.

"I heard the recording," I said.

He put the pencil down on the desk.

He didn't look surprised.

"Jenna's thorough," he said.

"You knew she was taping it."

"I knew she'd play it for you."

"So you said it for me."

"I said it because it's true."

"That's not an answer, Wyatt, that's a slogan."

He folded his arms.

He was leaning against the bookshelves, perfectly calm, and it made me want to throw a dictionary at him.

"You said 'again,'" I said. "You'd never touch me again. You've never touched me once."

Something went across his face, very fast.

"Figure of speech," he said.

"That's twice this week you've had a figure of speech."

"I'm an economics major. We're very figurative."

I laughed despite myself, and that made me angrier.

I crossed the room until I was standing right in front of him.

"Say it to my face," I said. "You'd never touch me. Look at me and say it."
