Chapter 11: The Witness List

The kettle started to scream behind me, and Wyatt didn't move to take it off.

He was looking at the legal pad in my hands.

I turned it around so he could see his own handwriting.

"Saturday, five-twenty," I said. "Before the formal. Before you called my father."

"Put it down, Annabel."

"White SUV. Eleven-forty."

My voice cracked on the numbers.

"How do you know that time?"

He crossed the room in three steps and took the pad out of my hands.

He didn't snatch it.

He just took it, and tore the top sheet off and folded it into his pocket.

"I'm a planner," he said. "I write things down."

"You wrote down a thing that hasn't happened."

"Then it's not a very good plan, is it?"

"Don't." I grabbed his wrist. "Don't make a joke."

He looked down at my hand on him.

He didn't pull away.

"Do you remember it?" I said, very quietly.

The kettle was still screaming.

In the bathroom, the tap shut off.

"Remember what?" he said.

But he said it a beat too late, and his pulse was jumping under my thumb.

"You know what," I said. "The parking lot. My gown. You."

The bathroom door opened.

"Who's letting the kettle die?" Maisie called. "Is this a cry for help?"

Wyatt slid his wrist out of my grip and went to the stove.

He turned the burner off.

The kettle wound down into silence.

"Go home, Annabel," he said, with his back to me.

"I'm going to find out."

"I know," he said. "That's what worries me."

On Monday morning, the dean of students called me into her office at nine.
