Chapter 10: The Tea

I got into the car, and Gabriel shut the door and told the driver to circle the block.

He sat with his elbows on his knees and his hands locked together.

"Rosalind says the doctor miscounted," he said. "She says you've been poisoning the seamstress's mind."

"And what do you say?"

He didn't answer for a long time.

"The Maldives was ten weeks ago," he said at last. "That was the first time we ever touched each other. The dates don't add up."

"Then you know the answer."

"I know what I remember." He rubbed his face. "I also remember everything else that I was sure of."

I stayed silent. It was the nearest he had come to doubting himself.

"Ask her to take a scan," I said. "With you in the room. Not her own doctor. Yours."

"She has an appointment tomorrow."

"Go with her."

He looked at me then, truly looked, and I saw how much he hated the thing he was thinking.

"If you're lying to me, Camille," he said.

"I've never lied to you. I've only stopped telling you things."

He stared at me. Then he knocked on the glass and told the driver to take me home.

The next morning, Rosalind came down to breakfast in a pale blue robe and told me she wanted tea.

"Chamomile," she said. "The nurse says it's the only thing that settles me. You make it so well, Camille."

I put the kettle on and made it, and I did not leave the pot.

I poured one cup and carried it to her myself, in front of the cook, the butler and both maids.
