Chapter 11: Fourteen Weeks

"It's yours," Rosalind said. "Gabe, how can you ask me that?"

She sat up in the bed with her hair stuck to her wet cheeks.

"We were together in the autumn. At the lake house. You said you'd lost count of the days."

"I have never been to a lake house with you," Gabriel said.

"You were drunk."

"I don't drink." His voice shook. "I remember every night I ever spent with you, Rosalind. There are very few of them, and I remember all of them."

She turned and found me in the gap of the curtain.

"It's her," she said. "She's been in your ear. She's been poisoning everything since the banquet, and you're listening to her."

"I never gave him a single date," I said. "The doctor did."

"Because you want him for yourself!"

The corridor behind me went quiet. Two nurses stopped walking.

Gabriel did not look at me. His whole attention was on the woman in the bed.

"Tell me the truth," he said. "Now. Whatever it is, I'll hear it."

Rosalind stared at him.

I saw her weigh it. I saw her look past him, to a place behind my shoulder.

Trenton had come up silently and was standing close behind me.

"Gabe," he said gently. "Let me take her home. She's exhausted. This isn't the place."

"Stay out of it, Trenton."

"I'm only saying."

"I said stay out."

For one second Trenton's face did something I had not seen it do.

The smile went off it, completely, and what was under it was blank and watchful.
