Chapter 19: The Cottage

Gabriel's POV

The gardener's cottage had one room, one bed and a roof that dripped.

Camille gave it to me the day I signed everything away.

"You can't sleep in the main house," she said. "It's mine now. But you can't sleep in the street either."

"The cottage is fine."

"I'm not being kind."

"I know," I said. "Thank you anyway."

That was nine days ago.

I owned a suitcase, two shirts and the suit I had worn to the cathedral. The company cars were hers. The accounts were hers.

I found out how small a man could be with no title, and I found out it was almost a relief.

Trenton was in a cell. The judge had refused his bail on the first morning.

The man from the dock had talked inside an hour, and Trenton's name was on every sentence.

Rosalind was in a quiet clinic in the city, with a nurse at her door and her baby kicking. She had written Camille one letter. Camille had not answered it.

The staff watched me carry my own bags across the lawn.

Nobody laughed. I would have preferred it.

On the fourth night, there was a knock at the cottage door, and it was the butler.

He put a velvet box on my table without looking at me.

"Miss Lockwood says you broke it," he said, "so you may fix it."

He left.

I opened the box.

The eighteen rubies lay in the velvet, each one loose. The clasp was beside them, bent, with her name still cut into the metal.
