Chapter 11: Savannah Alone

The diner was on a side street near campus, open all night, with a glass case of pies nobody bought.

Savannah sat in the last booth in a gray hoodie with the hood pulled up.

No bracelet, no makeup, and bitten nails.

I slid in across from her. Luka took the stool at the counter, forty feet away, and ordered coffee he wouldn't drink.

"You came," she said.

"You said it was about the money."

"It is." Her eyes went to the door and back. "I don't have long. She'll check my phone at ten."

"Who will?"

"Mom."

She said it like the name of a weather system.

"Is this a new act?" I said. "Because the cardigan was better."

She flinched, and for once it wasn't polished.

"I'm not here to apologize," she said. "I'm not sorry. You can hate me. I don't care."

"Then why are we here?"

"Because I'm more scared of her than I am of you." I waited.

A waitress filled my water glass and left.

"I took the money," Savannah said. "Nobody made me do that. I wanted the bracelet and the trips, and I liked having it. Everything I had was something they could take back. I figured out at about nine years old that you only get to stay if you're useful."

"That's a terrible way to live."

"It's the only way I know." She rubbed her wrist where the bracelet had been. "But the eighty. That wasn't me."

"Of course it wasn't."

"I'm serious, Cadence. I wanted to send you eight hundred. Maybe a thousand. I thought it was enough that you'd stay quiet and I'd stay comfortable." She swallowed. "Mom said no. She said eighty."
