Chapter 13: The Dress

The only dress I owned was a black one from a consignment shop, and the zipper stuck halfway up my back.

"Luka," I called through the bathroom door. "I need a second person."

"I've been a second person all week," he said. "What's the emergency?"

"Zipper."

He opened the door with his eyes politely on the ceiling.

I turned around and held my hair out of the way.

His fingers found the tab, and the zipper climbed an inch and caught again.

"It's the lining," he said. "Hold still."

His knuckles brushed my spine, and I stopped breathing for a second.

The zipper went all the way up.

He didn't take his hand away.

"Thanksgiving is Thursday," he said to the back of my neck.

"I know."

"I'm going with you."

I turned around too fast. "You can't. Your firm."

"My firm told me to resolve a family dispute quietly." He pushed his glasses up. "I'm going as your date. If anyone asks, I'm a law student with a free evening and a good suit."

"They'll know who you are."

"Good."

"Luka, they called your boss."

"And my boss said he'd like it handled for the firm's comfort." His mouth tilted. "I'm very uncomfortable. I'd like to handle it in person."

He had put on the suit while I wasn't looking, charcoal gray with a white shirt, no tie yet.

He looked like someone who had never once been kept from a room.

I smoothed the lapel because my hands wanted something to do.

"Grandma will be there," I said.

"Then I'll sit next to Grandma."

"She's going to love you."

"I'm counting on it."

He was close enough that I could smell the soap on his collar.
