"Put it down," Elias said again, quieter this time.

"No." I kept both hands flat on the page. "Tell me how you know."

He didn't take the book from me.

He crossed the room and sat on the floor a yard away, in his coat, with the cold of the morning still on it.

"On the eleventh of November last year, I woke up in my own bed upstairs," he said. "It was 2021."

"That's what you wrote."

"In the first life I died a year after you did."

I stared at him.

"You were still alive, in 2021," he said. "You were twenty-seven and walking around Ashville with no idea."

"You expect me to believe this."

"No. I expect you to test it."

I thought about that.

My heart was beating so hard I could feel it in my teeth.

"What was in the tea?" I said.

"Ginger, and under it something bitter. It goes after the nerves in the legs a little at a time." He said it flatly. "Marcy carried it in a steel thermos with a green lid."

I closed my eyes.

"What did I wear to the gala?"

"A dark green dress. Bryson took his jacket off and put it around your shoulders at the head table so the room would see him do it."

My hand went to my mouth.

"You were there," I said.

"I was at the terrace door. I asked if you wanted water or wanted to go home."

"You did."

"Marcy answered for you."
