I told him all of it.

I said it in a flat voice, with my eyes on the mint bowl, because that was the only way I could say it.

"It started in May. After the Memorial Day cookout, the one that ran late."

"He offered to drive me to my car. He told me I was the only person in the building who actually ran it."

"He kissed me in the parking lot, and I let him."

Jerome's hands stayed still.

"The first time was at the boat shed, on a Thursday, after the staff left."

"I told myself it was one time. Then it was every Thursday."

"Did you love him?"

"I told him I did, once. In August."

"Did you?"

"No. I loved being seen."

He closed his eyes.

"Did Darla ever meet him?"

"Never. I never brought her near that shed. I never said her name to him."

"Not once?"

"He knew her name. I didn't talk about her."

I made myself look up.

"I'm telling you that because it's true, not because it helps me."
