Chapter 12: Within a Year

Four hundred wolves held their breath at once.

On the south bank, Cressida's head came up.

"Three months ago," Alaric said, "my mother called me into her sitting room. She told me the moonstone had lit in your hands at her table. White. She said that meant your wolf would be white when it came."

I didn't move.

"She told me what a white wolf is. No Alpha can command her. Not me, not anybody." He swallowed. "And she told me that every man who ever marked one was dead within a year of the mark."

The river roared between us.

"She said your father was the proof. He marked your mother in the spring, and he was in the ground by the next winter. A fever, they said. Three days. She said it would be the same for me."

Behind me on the Kinloch bank, nobody made a sound.

"I didn't love Cressida," Alaric said. "I'm sorry, Cress. I didn't. I needed a reason the pack would believe, and Mother said you'd stand there and smile, and you did."

Cressida made a noise.

"I chose to live," Alaric said. "That's the truth. I picked my own life over you, and I did it at the altar in front of everyone, because Mother said if I did it in private you'd fight it, and if I did it in public you'd run."

He looked at me with wet eyes.

"I'm sorry, Linnet. I was afraid."

For a long moment nobody said anything at all.

Then, somewhere on the south bank, a man said, "Coward."
