Chapter 13: You Told Me I Was Chosen

I walked out of the Moon Court without looking back.

The stone yard outside was white with frost.

Agnes's old car sat at the far gate with its engine ticking.

I had gone only a few steps when I heard his boots behind me.

"Wynne."

I didn't stop.

"Wynne, please. Let me say it to your face."

I turned around.

He stood in the frost with his hands open at his sides.

He had no guards now. The Court's wolves had walked past him without a nod.

"Say it, then," I said.

"I lied to you."

"I heard. Everyone heard."

"I lied at the clinic, and I lied every day after."

My voice came out steady, and that surprised me.

"You told me I was chosen."

He flinched.

"You stood in front of my father and said the Goddess had given me a second bond. I believed you. I got in your truck."

"I was twenty years old, and the one person who couldn't throw me away had just thrown me away."

"Then you looked at me and said I was yours."

"For two weeks I thought something up there had picked me on purpose."

"I know," he said.

"You don't. You let me think it. You watched me think it."

"Yes."

He didn't try to say anything else, and that made me angrier.

"You told me you wouldn't touch me until I asked," I said.

"I did."

"I asked. You never said you wouldn't lie."

"No."

"You kept the one promise that cost you nothing."

"That's fair," he said.

"Why?" I said. "Plain words. Not the ones you gave the Court."
