Chapter 7: The Speaker
The Speaker of the Moon Court arrived on Tuesday at noon, in a grey sedan with two wolves in the front seat.
She was a tall woman of about seventy in a long grey coat. She carried no cane and no bag.
She stood in the Hall's front yard and looked me up and down.
"Your Majesty," she said. "Your mate."
"Wynne MacAulay," Alaric said. "Wynne, the Speaker."
"Pleased to meet you," I said.
"We'll see," the Speaker said.
She walked in a slow circle around me.
I stood very still with my hands at my sides. The wind was cold. A dozen of the Hall's wolves had come out onto the steps to watch.
"A King's mate wears his bite on her left shoulder," the Speaker said. "It's a hundred years of custom, and it's the Court's proof. Show me."
"There isn't one," I said.
"No."
"No," Alaric said. "She hasn't asked."
"The Court expects the mark within a moon of the claim," the Speaker said. "It need not be done in front of me. It must be on her shoulder, and visible, when you stand in Stonehaven at the new moon."
"That's a week from today," I said.
"Then you have a week," she said.
She turned her pale eyes on Alaric.
"A claim with no mark is a claim on paper, Your Majesty. The Court has been generous. It won't be generous twice."
Gravel crunched on the drive.
A second car was coming up the hill. It was my father's old truck.
The Speaker raised one eyebrow.
"Ah," she said. "I took the liberty of informing the Alpha of Silver Creek where I was going."
My father got out of the driver's side.
My sister got out of the other.
Delphine had dressed carefully in a pale blue coat and no makeup, and her eyes were pink. She looked about fourteen.
