Chapter 10: The Grandmother

We didn't go to the sheriff.

A human sheriff would ask what an omega was.

The pack would close.

And whoever had Tansy would move her somewhere we'd never find.

The next thing came in on Thursday night, in a Buick older than me.

Jarek's grandmother parked across two spaces and sat behind the wheel for a full minute.

She came in leaning on the blackthorn cane.

The burned laundress at our front desk stood up so fast her chair fell over.

"Luna," she said.

"Not for twelve years, dear. Sit down." The old woman looked around the waiting room. "Well. It's cleaner than I expected."

She looked at me. "I need a doctor."

"There's one on Mill Street."

"There's a man on Mill Street who told me my heart was old and to go home and knit." She sat down on a plastic chair. "I've been fluttering for days. Like a bird in a box."

I put her on the monitor.

Her heart was all over the place.

Fast, then skipping, then fast.

Atrial fibrillation.

Common in a wolf her age, eighty-one, and dangerous if nobody bothered.

"How long has it been like this?"

"On and off since the market." She watched the screen. "Since I heard my grandson tell a whole square to kneel, and one woman stayed standing."

I got her a pill to slow it down, and a cup of June's coffee.

"You know why it slid off you," she said.

"No, I don't."

"Yes, you do. You're a doctor. You just haven't let yourself say it."

I sat down across from her.

"Tell me."

"When an Alpha rejects his true mate in the old words, the Moon takes back what he threw away." She said it plainly, the way she'd tell me the price of eggs. "His hold on her goes first. Then his strength. Not all at once. Over a season. The pack feels it before he does."
