Chapter 19: The Heir
"She's lying," June said.
"Of course she's lying."
Abel fished his scrub top out of the kennel run and pulled it on inside out.
"Is she?" he said. "Humans get pregnant. It's mostly what they do."
June and I both looked at him.
"I'm just saying it's possible," he said. "Medically."
I watched the video again.
Posy held Jarek's hand up.
The pack hall cheered.
Jarek stood beside her and didn't smile.
His expression was completely blank.
"Possible," I said. "Not likely. She's been working too hard on that cough to remember to eat for two."
By morning the whole valley was celebrating.
The grandmother called at eight.
"They've lit the bonfire on the ridge," she said. "The omegas have been told to bake for the heir. Forty pies by Wednesday."
"Forty?"
"And a cake shaped like a wolf." She sounded like she'd swallowed a lemon. "My grandson sat in my kitchen at six this morning and asked how long a pup takes to show on a scan."
"What did you tell him?"
"Six weeks. I asked how far along she was. He said seven." She paused. "He didn't sound like a happy father, girl. He sounded like he was doing grim sums in his head."
