Chapter 28: In Front of Everyone
She ran for the far side of the ring, where the pines came down to the grass.
Where the omegas stood.
They didn't move.
The laundress.
Forty women and old men from the row, shoulder to shoulder, in work smocks and church coats.
Posy hit that line at a run and bounced off it.
She fell on her backside in the yellow grass.
"Move," she screamed at them. "Move, you dirty laundry dogs."
The laundress looked down at her.
"Tuesdays, nine to eleven," she said. "Come back then."
Then the line of omegas opened.
Not for Posy.
For the girl who walked out from behind it.
Tansy pushed her hood back.
Her mother walked on one side of her.
The enforcer walked on the other.
"That's Tansy Merle," someone said. "That's the Merle girl."
Tansy walked all the way into the middle of the ring.
She stopped in front of the senior Elder.
She pushed up both sleeves and held out her arms.
The needle marks ran in rows.
"Silver on my ankle," she said. "Up Wolverine Creek. Nobody asked what I wanted."
