Chapter 22: A Whole Night
The shower in our bathroom is big enough for four people, with a bench along one wall and a window onto the dark lawn.
Dario turned it on and held his hand under the water until it ran hot.
"Come in," he said.
I stepped under the spray and let it pour over my hair and the collar and down my back.
He stood behind me, and he took the shampoo and began to wash my hair.
His fingers were slow and sure on my scalp.
I leaned back against his chest with my eyes closed.
"You've done this before," I said.
"Never."
"You're very good at it."
"I pay attention."
He rinsed the soap away and turned me by the shoulders to face him.
He took the cloth and washed my arms, and my shoulders, and the line of my ribs.
He knelt and washed my legs, one at a time, and kissed the inside of each knee.
"Dario."
"Hold still."
When he stood, I put both hands on his face.
"Tonight at the club, I was..."
"Magnificent."
"I was cruel."
"You were exact." He turned his mouth into my palm. "I have been strong all my life, and I never knew I could put it down. I put it down for you, in front of everyone, and nobody laughed."
"Nobody would."
"No." His hands settled at my waist. "That's what I'm saying."
I kissed him under the water.
It was slow, and warm, and tasted of rain and salt.
He lifted me, and set my back to the tile, and I wrapped my legs around his hips.
"Tell me what you want," he said.
"Slow."
"Slow."
He pushed into me with his eyes open on mine, and I gasped at the stretch of him.
He did not move for a long moment.
He held me against the wall with the water running over both of us and kissed my jaw, and my cheek, and the corner of my mouth.
