Chapter 13: The Ring

I went through the side door a step behind Lucan and a step ahead of everyone else.

The corridor opened onto the stable yard, and the cold hit me in the face.

It had started to snow again.

Perrin was at the far gate, tearing at the bar with both hands.

The bar did not move.

Two Ashfall riders sat their horses on the other side of the wood, and one of them called over it, calmly, "We were told to keep it shut, Alpha."

Lucan had gone still beside me.

"Let her do it," he said, very quietly.

I looked at him.

"It's yours," he said. "Not mine."

Perrin turned around.

His coat was torn at the shoulder, and his hair was wet with snow.

For the first time in my life, I saw my brother afraid.

"You were supposed to freeze," he said.

"I know," I said. "You chained me to the tree so you could be sure."

"Our father gave Stormbrook everything he had." His voice shook. "Your mother's line outranks every Beta and every Alpha in these mountains. One Bloodwood child with a pack behind her, and Stormbrook kneels."

"So you made a false one."

"I made a safe one." He took a step toward me. "I held this pack together for ten years. I should have been thanked."

"Thanked."

"I did what a Beta is for."

His hand went down to his boot.

I saw the silver blade come out before I saw his face change.

He was on me in two strides, the knife low and aimed at my ribs, and I heard Lucan roar behind me and knew he would not reach us in time.

Perrin's eyes were fixed on mine.

They were the same hazel as my father's.

"Kneel," a small voice said from the archway.
