Chapter 17: The Black Chair
Theron waited at the gate of the Stormbrook hall in the grey light, with his father's fur cloak on his shoulders.
He looked ten years older than he had in the council.
Six of his own wolves stood behind him, and they kept their eyes down.
"I'm Alpha Stagg now," Theron said. "I wanted to say it to your face before I said it to anyone else."
"Then you've said it."
"My father burned his own paper before he died." His voice was rough. "The one that gave Stormbrook your pups. He had me watch it burn."
I said nothing.
"I came to tell you they are yours and I want nothing from them," Theron said. "Nothing at all."
"You wanted something ten years ago."
"I did."
"What was it?"
"A mate who looked good beside me." He swallowed. "I said a thing through a door that I will hear until I die."
Lucan stood a pace behind me, and I felt him tense.
I put out a hand without turning, and he stopped.
"I accept the paper being burned," I said. "That is all I accept."
"There's one more thing."
"Say it."
"Corinna." Theron looked at his boots. "The bond never took. She asked me last night to give her up. She wants to come before you and answer for it, and I don't have the right to keep her from that."
"Send her to the Bloodwood keep. Not with an escort. Alone, on foot."
"That's a hard road in snow."
"It was a hard road for me," I said.
He nodded.
He stepped back, and his wolves opened a lane for us to pass.
