Chapter 6: The Tea

I went down to the great hall in a borrowed robe with my daughter against my shoulder.

Torren walked on my left, and the healer carried my son.

The king was already waiting at the head of the hall, and he stood up when he saw me.

Camille stood in the middle of the stone floor with two guards beside her.

She had cried until her eyes were swollen, and she held a small green tin in both hands.

Her braid had come loose.

"Miri," she said, and her voice broke. "Oh, Miri, thank the Goddess. I've been so frightened."

I stopped ten feet away.

"You left the pack," I said.

"I ran. Grandfather said the king's men would take me, and I didn't know what else to do." She wiped her face. "I've been walking since noon. I got a ride from a trucker."

"Why have you got the tin?"

"I brought it so nobody could say I'd hidden it!"

She held it out to me with both hands.

"Please, Miri. I mixed it fresh this morning. You've just had the twins and you'll be so tired, and I'm so sorry about the photographs, I never thought Dalton would be so cruel. Just have a cup and sit down."

It was what she had said every morning for fourteen years.

It was gentle and kind and so ordinary that for a second my hand started to rise.
