Chapter 14: Silver
They lit the torches at dusk.
The pack carried them up the hill in grey jackets, hundreds of them, and set them in a ring around the stones.
I stopped at the gap in the wall and could not make my feet go on.
A ring of fire, and every face turned toward the middle.
It was my dream, down to the smell of pitch.
"Put them out," I said.
The elder beside me frowned. "The rite is held by torchlight."
"It was held by torchlight the last time."
"Put them out," said Osian, not loud, and two hundred wolves heard him.
The torches went into the frost one by one with a long hiss.
When the last one died, there was only the moon, fat and white and low over the eastern ridge.
I walked into the ring alone.
Edgar's litter waited at the rim, set down on the grass by four wolves.
He lay with his hands curled on his chest, and the black thread showed through the torn quarter-zip, thin and shining.
