"Lenna," said Edgar. "Please, I..."
He got no further.
I stood up in the King's coat with the frost burning my bare feet, and the pack went a step back as one animal.
"No," I said.
It came out low and level, and it carried to the ridge.
"You spoke first once, at this Stone, with all of them watching."
"You don't get to speak first twice."
Edgar's mouth worked.
The grey of his skin had gone almost blue, and the black thread stood up on his chest.
I could feel it, now that I knew what it was.
It ran from his ribs to my wrist, and it hurt.
"I'm not here to hear you beg," I said. "I'm here to answer."
The head elder stood very straight at the rim of the ring, with her staff upright.
"Say it as it was taught," she said. "Before the Moon."
I had never learned the words, and I knew them anyway.
They came up out of the little silver wolf in me.
