The Thorpe Group boardroom had a long oak table and six people who did not want to look at me.
The board chair sat at the head with a folder squared in front of her.
The Harcourt chairman sat at her left hand, having been invited as a courtesy.
He had brought his own pastry.
Max stood at the foot of the table, because he was not allowed to vote on his own fiancee.
"Ms. Bishop's work built this project," he said. "Six months of drawings came out of her studio without a single error."
"And one that could have killed people," said the board chair.
"One that she did not make."
"The seal is hers."
"Her old seal, stamped by a hand that cannot cross a seven."
A man at the middle of the table cleared his throat.
"Max, the insurer will not read sevens. The insurer will read a name, and the name is Bishop."
"Then the insurer can read mine."
"Is that a threat?"
"It's a position."
The board chair opened her folder.
"Ms. Bishop," she said. "Is there anything you wish to add?"
