Chapter 22: The Letter
"Read me the date," Doyle said.
Noelle had sat up beside him with the sheet clutched to her chest.
Paper rustled on the line.
"April ninth," Abel said. "Signed A. Roark, and stamped by a clinic on Genesee Street."
"Anna died on the twenty-ninth of March," Noelle said.
She said it flat and fast, with no tears.
"I closed her eyes. I wrote the time on the chart. A woman can't sign anything eleven days after that."
Doyle leaned his forehead against hers for one second.
"It's a bluff," he said.
"A desperate one," said Abel's tired voice.
At four o'clock on Saturday, the Cavanagh family sat at the long table in the tasting room, as it had for forty years.

Harlan sat at the head with his cane across his knees.
He wore a fresh gray suit, and his hair was combed, and he looked like a man attending his own retirement dinner.
To his right sat a thin lawyer in a gray tie.
Cade sat at the far end with his wrist in a hospital cast, between two cousins who had stopped looking at him.
Ray Lowry stood by the copper kettles with his arms folded, as a guest.
