Chapter 4: The Fiancé at the Curb

Conroy Weatherford came down the ramp in his chair and stopped at the foot of the steps.

He wore a dark jacket and no tie.

A leather strap was buckled around his left wrist, and his right hand rested on the control stick.

He did not look at the neighbors, though every one of them was looking at him.

He looked at me.

"Miss Drummond," he said.

"Mr. Weatherford."

"Howard called me at noon," he said. "He said the engagement was void, because you were not his daughter and the families no longer had an understanding."

"That sounds like him."

"I told him I would hear it from you."

His voice was level and unhurried.

In four months he had never said more than ten words to me at once.

I came down the steps so we would not be talking up and down at each other.

Behind me the door stayed open a hand's width.

I knew Poppy and Amos were in the gap.

"Did you leave the ring in a dish?" Conroy asked.

"On the hall table. By the front door."

"Why?"

"Because it was theirs."

"It was mine," he said. "I bought it."

"Then I'll send it back to you."

"Do you want to?"

I had not expected the question.

I looked at his face.

He had a straight nose and a hard jaw, and his eyes were a blue that gave away nothing.

At the engagement dinner I had looked at everything in the room except him.
