Chapter 16: Everything on the List

"Mr. Thorpe," the deputy said, "I have a court order to enter and secure the property listed."

"I don't care what you have."

"Sir, I'm asking you to step away from the gate."

Lawrence gripped the bars with both hands.

He had bought that house for his wife thirty years ago, and I had paid for the roof, the pool, the wall and the gate he was holding.

"This is a family matter," he said, loud enough for the street. "Weston, my boy, you can't do this in front of the whole neighborhood."

"You could have repaid it in front of nobody," I said. "You had thirty days."

"I was going to!"

"With what?"

He had no answer, and half of Brookline watched him not have it.

A woman in a quilted vest raised her phone.

Another, down the road, was already filming from her car.

The deputy sighed, signaled to one of the movers, and a man came up the drive with a pair of bolt cutters.

The chain parted in two bites.

The gates swung inward, and Lawrence stumbled back with his hands still raised.

"You'll regret this," he said. "I made you."

"You skimmed me."

"After all I did!"

"You took eleven point four million dollars, Lawrence. You did that."

My lawyer handed the deputy the list.

Then the trucks came up the drive, and the movers went inside.

The first thing out of the front door was a long walnut table.

Four men carried it across the grass.

Then came dining chairs, six of them, in a row. Then a painting of a harbor. Then the silver cabinet, and the sofa from the sitting room, and a leather armchair with a stain on its arm from Lawrence's favorite whiskey.
