Chapter 13: The Annex

Cal carried Lexi to the bench and sat her down very gently.

My chief of staff came back from the lobby desk with ice in a napkin.

Lexi held it to her lip and looked at the three of us, then at the glowing map on the wall.

"Is this yours?" she asked me.

"Yes."

"Wow," she said, in a small voice. "He told me you were just a girl he'd been nice to."

"We'll talk about that later," Sean said. "Right now we have a ledger to steal."

"Not steal," I said. "Find first."

"We're calling Dad," said Cal.

"We are not."

"Lena." Cal crouched so his face was level with mine. "If we go into a hospital basement at night and don't tell him, he'll find out and he'll never forgive us. If we tell him, he'll be there anyway."

He was right, and I hated it.

Lou met us on the corner by the Mercy General annex at seven, still in his roofing boots, with tar on his sleeves.

He had come straight from a job in Astoria.

"Tell me," he said.

I told him some of it.

I told him Gordon was coming to burn a book, and that I did not know what was in it.

I did not tell him that Gordon had said June, because I did not know how to say that out loud yet.

Lou listened with his jaw set, and then looked at the dark brick building.

"I put a roof on that annex nine years ago," he said. "Nobody locks the loading dock on the north side. The latch sticks."

"Dad," Cal said.

"Don't start." He was already walking. "I know every door in this block."

We went in through the loading dock single file, Lou first, then Cal, then Sean with Lexi's hand in his, then me.

The basement smelled of dust and floor wax.
