Chapter 22: The Right Stone

We went on Sunday, all five of us, with yellow flowers from the stand by the subway.

Lou carried them, and Lexi walked beside him, matching his steps.

The grass was dry this time, and the sky was a clean, hard blue.

At the small stone in the back row, Lexi stopped.

She read the name on it, JUNE, and the single date, and then she looked at me.

"That isn't hers," she said.

"No."

"It's yours."

"It was," I said. "My mother picked it. I like it, and I'm keeping it somewhere safe. But I don't want it on this stone."

Lou turned to us.

He had a folded paper in his hand, the receipt from the stone cutter on Queens Boulevard.

"I called the man yesterday," he said. "I asked what it costs to change one. He wanted to know if somebody had died."

"What did you say?" asked Sean.

"I said somebody had been found."

Cal laughed, and wiped his nose on his sleeve.

Lexi knelt in front of the stone.

She touched the top of it with two fingers, the way Lou did.

"Gordon never gave her a name," she said. "I found out last week. He told me she was a girl, and that she died, and that I wasn't to ask anything else."
