Chapter 14: Lisbon

Camilla's POV

My phone had been recording since the potting shed.

I had pressed the red button there and slid it into my cardigan pocket with the screen down.

I had not told Kirk. That was my rule broken again, and I would pay for it later.

I kept my hand over the pocket and said nothing.

Kirk stood three feet from me with his shoulders locked.

He still had not answered his brother.

"Minute's nearly gone, little brother," Chadwick said.

"Don't call me that," Kirk said.

He walked across the flower bed and stood next to me, close enough that our sleeves touched.

He did not look at Chadwick again.

Chadwick's smile slipped, only a little, and then came back.

"Fine," he said. "Then I'll make my offer to the person it concerns."

He leaned on the doorframe and looked me over from my wet socks to the scar on my eyebrow.

"The insurance paid four million, Camilla. Sheridan and I have been very careful with it."

"I'm told there's half a million that could go to you."

"A passport in a new name, and a flat in Lisbon where nobody has heard of Quarry Road."

"All you have to do is get on the plane and never write a letter, never open your mouth to a reporter."

"You're offering me money for the five years," I said.

"I'm offering you a life," Chadwick said.

"You drove my car."

"I did. It handles beautifully."

He said it so lightly that for a second I did not understand him.
