Chapter 12: Bess

Jo found him at first light, sitting on the curb beside the motel ice machine.

He had put his shirt on inside out.

His gloves were back on, both of them, pulled tight to the wrist.

"You broke rule three," she said.

"I know."

"You left me alone in a room with a locked door and a hole in the window."

"I know. I'm sorry." He did not look up. "I had to be somewhere you weren't."

"Why?"

"I can't say yet."

"That's the fourth time."

"Jo." He lifted his head, and his eyes were red and very tired. "You didn't do anything wrong. Last night was..." He stopped. His voice broke on the next word. "It was the best thing that's happened to me in either life. I need you to know that before I say anything else."

She stood there with her arms folded and her heart doing something she did not want to name.

"Then say the rest."

"I will. Soon. I need two days."

"Why two days?"

"Because I need to be sure of something first."

She looked at him for a long moment.

He held her eyes, and the glove was the one lie she had caught him in.

He only held back.

"Two days," she said. "And then I get all of it, or I start asking Faulk."

"Agreed."

Her phone rang.

It was a number she knew, and it was not Bess.
