Chapter 20: First Barrel
I read the text to Marlee in the car on the way to Lettie's.
"A camera crew," she said. "For B-roll. That man is a vampire in a sweater."
"He wants me crying in Kentucky."
"So don't cry in Kentucky." She turned the radio up. "Cry in Indiana like a normal person."
I slept on Lettie's couch in town that night. Marlee slept in the recliner with her mouth open.
Saturday the cars started coming up the distillery drive at five, an hour before the gates opened.
Pickups, minivans and a church bus from Midway.
By six thirty Rickhouse A was full.
Four hundred people on hay bales and folding chairs and standing three deep along the racks, under the string lights.
My voice was on every speaker.
Stop three. The flood of 1978, when the creek came up to the second rack and Lettie's granddaddy rowed a johnboat between the barrels.
People were listening. Not everyone. Enough.
The old woman from the diner was there in her quilted vest, in a folding chair right on the aisle.
She caught my eye and gave me a thumbs-up.
