Chapter 29: Main Street
I set the tray down on the porch boards.
I stood up so we were closer to eye level. We weren't, really. We never would be.
"Yes," I said.
His shoulders came down, his face softening completely.
"Yes, and here are the words that go with it," I said.
"I pay for groceries. I bring my own coffee maker, because yours tastes like a tire. And I carry my own boxes up that hill."
"All of them?"
"Every box. You can hold the door."
He smiled. It went all the way up this time.
"After the opening," I said. "I'm not moving house and opening a studio in the same week. Marlee would kill us both."
"After the opening," he said.
He kissed me on the porch with the dumplings going cold, slow and certain, like we had all the time in the world.
We did.
The gold lettering went up on the front window that Thursday.
A sign painter from Lexington did it by hand, standing on a milk crate, in the curly old-bank style.
