Freddie didn't come home that night.
He didn't answer Mum's texts either.
On Tuesday evening the traders met in the launderette to plan Friday, because it had the most chairs.
Kirsty's nan sat by the change machine with a notepad.
The key-cutter brought his own stool.
The florist's daughter and the chip shop owner sat on a dryer each, swinging their feet.
Kirsty did my nails while we talked, because she said I'd bitten them to stubs since Saturday.
Lev was on his back under the broken dryer, fixing it with a torch in his teeth.
"Ice," the chip shop owner was saying. "If it's hot Friday we need ice for the cider."
"I'll ask the pub," Mum said.
The bell over the door rang.
Freddie stood in the doorway in his navy suit.
He had his tie off. His eyes were red at the rims. He looked like he hadn't slept since Monday morning.
Everybody stopped talking.
