"Are you lost, love?"
The guard by the lifts didn't get up.
It was one in the morning.
I was in the lobby of Sokolov House in Kirsty's black dress, for the second time in my life.
It was the same guard.
Older by a year. A different logo on his jumper, because the building had different owners now.
He looked at me, and I watched him remember.
His face went pink to the ears.
"No," I said. "Thirty-first floor. He's expecting me."
This time he was.
The guard stood up.
"Miss Haddow," he said. "I'm sorry. For last year. I didn't know what he wanted you for."
"I know you didn't."
"He's up there. The new lot let him have the key for one night. Said it was the least they could do, after what was in the ceilings."
He walked me to the lift himself and pressed thirty-one.
He didn't pick up his phone once.
The lift was still all mirrors.
The girl riding up beside me had flour under one fingernail that no scrubbing would shift.
