Chapter 17: Proof
I stood up out of my father's chair.
I didn't hide.
I walked right up to the glass and stood there in the streetlight with my arms crossed, looking at him.
The phone stayed up for one more second.
Then he lowered it, turned his back and slid into the crowd at the bar.
White shirt, dark hair, nobody.
Brine had forty white shirts on that roof.
I went out on my stairs barefoot and stood on the top step until the music stopped at one.
He didn't come back to the rail.
After that I shut the blinds every night before I turned on a light.
I checked them twice.
On Tuesday the twenty-first, in the middle of second turn, my oven died.
It didn't go quietly.
The pilot went out three times in twenty minutes, and the third time it wouldn't relight, and the kitchen smelled like gas.
My grill cook shut the valve and opened the back door.
I finished the night on the flat-top and the fryer and two burners, and I comped every dessert in the house.
