Chapter 29: The Last Night of the Season
"No," I said.
Barrett's face didn't move.
Frankie's pen did.
"Low Tide doesn't need a sous chef who works for scallops," I said.
"It needs one who works for twenty-two dollars an hour, with a W-2, like everybody else."
His shoulders came down.
"And scallops," he said.
"And family meal. And you still don't say behind when I can see you."
"That's the rule."
"It's not the rule."
He unrolled the knife roll on the steel.
It opened flat with a sound.
Frankie wrote "SOUS: B." on the legal pad and underlined it three times.
The thirtieth of September was a Wednesday.
It was the day my old lease would have run out.
Instead, a new one sat in a folder by the register.
Five years, my old rent, signed in blue ink by an eighty-one-year-old man in Florida.
His grandson had mailed it with a sticky note. "He says save him a cup."
It was also the last night of the summer season.
From October, we'd go to Thursday through Sunday, with the winter menu.
