Chapter 16: The Meeting

On Friday at six, the lobby smelled of wet wool and old radiators.

Twelve folding chairs stood in rows on the tile, and every one was taken.

The couple from Unit Two sat in front with their baby asleep on a shoulder.

The man from Unit Three, who worked nights, stood against the mailboxes in his jacket.

I sat in the back row with my sketchbook open on my knees and did not draw a single line.

Lena stood at the front by the stairs, in a clean flannel and her good boots.

She held a manila folder.

Her face was perfectly calm.

Under her shirt I knew the ring hung on its chain, and I knew how it felt when it brushed my cheek.

Hannah's brother sat in the first chair on the left.

He was thirty-six, tall and tired-looking, with Hannah's dark hair and a very good coat.

Next to him sat a man in a gray suit with a tablet on his knee.

"Thank you all for coming," Lena said.

Her voice carried without effort.

"My brother-in-law asked me to call this. He has something to say about the building."

Hannah's brother stood.

"I'll be quick," he said. "My sister's name is on a lot of this paperwork.

"Lena has been running the place alone for two years, and it's wearing her down."

Nobody spoke.

"This man represents a developer who wants to buy the building for one point nine million."

He opened a hand toward the suit.

"That's real money. Lena could stop working. She could finally rest."

The man in the suit smiled at the room.

"Existing tenants would be offered a relocation payment," he said. "Six months of rent."

The woman with the baby put a hand on its back.

I felt my own pulse in my ears.

Lena let the silence sit for a moment.

Then she opened the manila folder.

"This is the deed," she said. "Recorded the year my father died. One name on it. Mine."

She held it up so the back row could see the stamp.

"This is the county record. It says Hannah never owned any part of this building."

She turned the next page.

"She asked me not to put her on it. She said I'd need it clean one day."
