Chapter 22: The Open Door
I looked at my father on the frozen grass.
He did not look away, though his face was wet.
"I want him to keep every appointment he has made," I said. "Every visit from the state, and he stays for all of them."
"I want him in the chair beside my bed the next time I am sick."
"And I will say when it is enough."
My father nodded once.
The great-aunt let her breath out.
"That is a better answer than I would have given," she said. "Well. Breakfast."
The clan went in.
My grandfather did not.
He stood at the pillar with his cane and watched me come up the steps.
"Come and sit with me," he said. "In the east room. I would like to open the curtains myself."
He did it with both hands, and the sun came across the floor.
The housekeeper had opened the window, and the air smelled of frost and cut grass.
He sat in the wing chair and patted the arm.
I climbed up and sat on it, as I had sat on his shoulders in the orchard in some other life.
