Chapter 12: The Other Buyer
I went down the stairs of the plane in bare feet, with Tristan one step behind me.
The tarmac was cold and gritty.
The aide stood between my father and the plane with both arms spread.
"Sir, this is a private airfield," he said. "You cannot be here."
"I was invited," my father said pleasantly. "By the owner of this airplane."
"Dad," I said.
"Delaney." He beamed. "You look rested."
"Get off this field."
"I will, as soon as I've said my piece." He turned his smile on Tristan. "Your Highness. I won't keep you. I only came for the balance."
The air changed.
I felt it before I understood it, the way you feel a step missing in the dark.
"What balance?" I asked.
Tristan said, very quietly, "Mr. Wisniewski, not here."
"Where, then?" My father spread his hands. "You were supposed to wire it on delivery. I've been patient. You took delivery two days ago, in the parking lot behind the lodge, and you drove off with the goods."
"Dad."
"Seven hundred and fifty thousand dollars," my father said, to Tristan, not to me. "That's the figure in the broker's contract. A quarter was paid in advance. The remainder is due on delivery. It's all in writing, and my lawyer has a copy."
The man with the briefcase opened it and drew out a sheaf of papers.
My feet seemed to have frozen to the tarmac.
"Delivery of what?" I said.
Nobody answered.
The wind blew a strand of hair across my mouth.
Tristan had gone gray around the lips.
"Delaney," he said. "Please. Let me explain it properly."
"Delivery of what?" I said again.
