Chapter 16: Halvern
The palace of Halvern sat on a cliff, with snow on every roof and a flag the size of a house.
I came up its steps in sneakers from a Michigan gas station, with my brother's hand in mine.
I was there because a dying man had my blood, and I wanted to meet him before he was gone.
That was the whole reason, and I kept it in front of me.
Tristan had not argued with it, and he had not tried to touch me since the plane.
Now he walked a pace behind me, and he did not speak.
Two lines of servants stood at attention in the courtyard.
Their breath made little clouds.
A man in a gray wool coat came down the stairs toward us with both arms already open.
He was about sixty, with silver hair swept back from a high forehead and eyes the color of tea.
He looked like every kind uncle in every movie.
"Adelaide," he said.
His voice shook.
"My God. Look at you. You have your mother's chin."
