Chapter 11: Scent Coil

Forty wolves turned their heads and looked at me.

So did the women behind me, and the guards on the wall, and my mother, with her hands white on the pitchfork.

I walked out past the barricade.

My knees were not steady, but my voice was.

"Yes," I said. "I came up this mountain. I came because I was sent, and I was sent with something that was not mine."

"Wynn," Delphine said. "Please."

"Torin."

He was already beside me.

He held out his closed hand, and I looked at him, and he opened it.

In his palm lay a small red stone and a pinhead of black wax, and a coil of silver wire thinner than a hair.

"Show the envoy," I said.

He gave it to the gray woman.

She turned it over between two fingers, and her mouth went thin.

"This is a scent coil," she said. "I haven't seen one since the Accord."

"What does the Accord say?" I asked.

"That no pack may follow an offering once she has been given." She lifted her eyes to Theron. "It is the first law of the call, Alpha. A tribute goes alone."

"I never saw that," Theron said.

"It was in my friend's brooch," I said. "My friend who pinned it on me in front of two hundred people."

I turned to Delphine.

She had stopped crying.

Her face was composed and a little pale, and her eyes were green and level.
