Chapter 16: Dutch Bleeds
Dutch Sumner sat on an overturned milk crate in the alley behind Brine with his shirt open.
Someone at the hospital had taped his ribs, and the eye had been dressed with gauze.
It was a quarter to six.
The sky over the river had gone the color of dishwater.
Nolan stood in front of him in dry clothes, his hair still wet.
Ford stood a pace behind with his jacket buttoned to the throat.
Skye stayed in the doorway, one hand on the frame.
"You've got a nerve," said Ford.
"I do," Dutch agreed.
"I held that woman's arms last night."
"I've been sitting in a waiting room for two hours trying to figure out how to stop having held them."
Lorna's voice came from inside the door.
"Darling, you can start by not standing out there in the cold."
Dutch looked up.
She had a tea towel pressed to her lip and a cup in the other hand.
