Chapter 8: The House

Ford went to his knees.

He did it without a flicker of hesitation.

The suit trousers creased and the bricks took his weight, and he lifted his head to the woman in the chair with an expression Nolan had never seen on him.

It was relief.

It was the face of a man who has finally put down something heavy.

"Good," Skye said softly.

She settled back in the high seat, one boot crossed over her knee, and looked at Nolan across the long empty floor.

"Come here."

He came.

His legs did it by themselves.

He stopped at the foot of the dais with his arms hanging, looking from her to Ford and back.

"The chair is mine," Skye said.

"The building is mine.

"Brine is a company called Brine LLC, and I own every share.

"I sold my father's three boats six years ago to build it, and Ford lent me the rest."

"You're the owner," Nolan said.

"I'm the House."

"But Ford..."

"Is my front man.

"And my fiancé.

"And," she said, with a glance down at the kneeling man, "mine."

Ford's mouth twitched, and he did not lower his eyes.

"Senators and surgeons won't join a club run by a shrimper's daughter," Skye said.

"They'll join one run by a billionaire with a pocket watch.

"So I wrote every rule and he stood in front of them.
