Chapter 5: The Flag
Joanna did not answer Hank.
She looked at Dorian, and Dorian looked at the ground.
"Get in the car," she said quietly.
They got in, and the car pulled out of the lot without its lights on.
Leanne stood by the curb and watched it go.
Then she turned to me.
"Connor, please. Come home."
"Go home, Leanne," Hank said.
His voice was mild and he did not move.
She looked at him for a long second, and then she turned and walked off across the lot.
She did not look back.
Hank put me in the front seat of his truck and drove for twenty minutes.
He lived in a narrow house with a porch light on and nobody inside.
He put me on his couch with a blanket and a mug of broth, and sat on a chair across from me with his cane across his knees.
"How long have you known?" I asked.
"Three weeks," he said. "I saw her at a grocery store across town, with a boy on her hip."
He rubbed his jaw.
"I thought I was losing my mind. Five years, and she still tucks her hair behind the same ear when she's thinking. I followed her to that building and sat outside it for two weeks."
"You didn't call me."
"I wanted to be sure. I've buried one partner already. I wasn't going to dig her up for a mistake."
I put the mug down.
"Tell me what you know."
He leaned over and slid a folder from under the table.
"The car was a rental. A rental, Connor. Detectives don't take rentals on a surveillance run. It burned at three a.m. on an empty road, and the medical examiner said there was nothing left to test."
