Chapter 13: The Table
"Someone needed you to be afraid," Burke said again, and put my phone in my hand.
"My father needed me afraid," I said.
"Or the man who prints his letters."
He didn't say it gently.
He wasn't a gentle man this morning, and I wasn't asking him to be.
"I'll go to the county," he said. "I'll go to a judge if I have to."
"Not yet."
"Jillian."
It was the first time he'd said my name since I told him who I was.
It sounded like it cost him.
"My mother texted again," I said. "He's got six of his old foremen coming to the house tonight."
"For what?"
"A farewell supper for the house. He wants them to sign a letter to the state board saying you stole Ruddock Metals."
Burke's jaw moved once.
"Those men worked for him thirty years."
"And he's going to feed them roast and ask them to put their names on a lie."
He opened the bottom drawer of his desk, took out a green folder tied with string, and held it out.
