Chapter 16: The Grandmother's Door
Junie's grandmother lived in a gray stone house at the end of a long drive in Sewickley Heights.
I stood on her front step at ten on Saturday morning, in yesterday's dress, with a crayon drawing in my bag.
I rang the bell before I could think myself out of it.
A housekeeper opened the door and looked at me for a long moment.
"She isn't expecting anyone."
"Tell her it's Jillian Ruddock."
The housekeeper's face changed.
She closed the door, and for four full minutes I stood on a stone step in the cold.
Then the door opened again, and I was walked through a hall of dark portraits into a glass sunroom.
The grandmother sat in a wicker chair with a cup of tea she wasn't drinking.
She wore a gray sweater and the pearls, and she didn't stand.
"You have remarkable nerve," she said.
