Chapter 20: Closing Day
Dex's POV
On Monday at ten the big boardroom had every chair filled and none of them mine.
I stood against the wall with my resignation letter signed in the lawyer's folder.
Raymond MacAvoy sat at the head of the table in a navy suit, with the tan and the smile.
His lawyer sat at his right.
Valeria sat at the left in a gray dress, with her trustee's folder open and a pen laid across it.
She did not look at me.
Ben sat with the married investors, who looked sick.
Ines sat at the foot of the table, where she had sat for the shareholder meeting, with her notebook closed and a manila envelope under her hand.
Behind the glass wall of the corridor, the staff had begun to gather.
First ten, then thirty, then all of them, standing in silence with their coffee cups.
MacAvoy noticed and smiled wider.
"Shall we?" he said.
The lawyer started to read the closing documents.
Ines raised her hand.
"I have something for the table," she said.
"Ms. Navarro." MacAvoy's voice was kind. "You're welcome to observe. You have no standing."
"I know."
She opened the envelope and slid it down the table.
Inside were pages and pages of paper, stapled in bunches.
The lawyer took the top one and read it.
His face changed.
"Mr. MacAvoy, this is a resignation."
"Whose?"
"The director of customer support. Effective on the day Corwin takes ownership." He turned the page. "This is the senior engineer. This is the head of accounts."
MacAvoy took a stack from him.
Ines spoke evenly.
"There are eighty-nine. The ninetieth is mine. Every one of them signed on Saturday and Sunday, in my mother's restaurant, and they will go into effect at ten oh one."
