Chapter 17: The Seals
Henry's POV
I had hidden my power for a year, and I used it in Market Square in the time it takes to draw a breath.
The watchman had Lydia by the arm.
I looked at his hand, and then I took the ring off my finger and held it up.
It was the Seal of the Kingdom's Ministry, black stone set in iron, and in Wexmoor there are perhaps thirty men who know it on sight.
The watch captain was one of them.
He went white, and he took off his hat.
"My lord."
"Captain, take your man's hand off Lady Barrington."
The watchman let go at once.
"You have a death in the square," I said. "You will keep it properly. The body is to be carried to the vestry of Saint Clement's and laid there, under guard of the King's own men, not yours. Nobody touches her. No one comes in or out without my written hand."
"My lord, the law says the city watch..."
"The law says the Minister of the Seals may take any death touching the Crown into his own keeping," I said. "Would you like to read me the clause?"
He would not.
I turned to the crowd.
There were three hundred of them, and every face was turned my way.
"Lady Barrington is not under arrest," I said. "She is under my protection. If any man in this square wishes to say otherwise, he may say it to me, and then to the King."
Nobody spoke.
A fishwife at the front lowered her eyes, and I saw her lips move.
I took Lydia's hand, and it was cold and shaking.
She was looking at me with an expression I had never seen on her.
