Chapter 21: The Note
Perry's POV
On Monday at nine, we walked into the boardroom of Strand Capital on the fortieth floor.
My father went first, in his own gray suit, with his shoulders back.
Cosima walked at my side with the bracelet on her wrist.
Edmund came last, with his cane, and two lawyers behind him carrying the same black case.
The heavy man in the silver suit sat at the head of a long glass table.
He had four lawyers around him, and none of them looked well.
"Mr. Fairchild," he said, to my father. "You have the money?"
"No," my father said.
"Then the note is called. I told Mr. Kingsford on Friday."
"You told him before you had read the police report," I said.
The heavy man's eyes came to me.
"I don't follow."
I put a folder on the glass and slid it down the table.
"Every bid Fairchild Freight sent out this year," I said. "The same bids, an hour earlier, from Trent's login to an address at your firm. And your underbid for every one of them, on your own letterhead, a day later."
His lawyers leaned over the page.
"Your partners did not sign off on stolen bid data," I said. "They still bought a note that was built to take my father's company."
"We acted in good faith," one lawyer said.
"Then explain the good faith to the district attorney," said Edmund.
He said it mildly, and the room went very quiet.
"A complaint was filed on Saturday morning," Edmund said. "It names Trent Fairchild. It also names a recipient of stolen commercial documents, and the recipient will be whoever signed the underbids."
The heavy man set his hand flat on the table.
"I signed the bids."
"Yes."
"My daughter has not spoken to me since Friday," he said, hoarsely. "She says I let her stand in a room with a liar and a thief."
