Chapter 23: The Bridge
Cosima drove out of the city with the window down and did not ask me where I wanted to go.
She turned onto the river road, and the long gray bridge rose ahead of us in the afternoon light.
My hands went cold in my lap.
"Stop the car," I said.
She pulled over on the shoulder and put on the brake.
"You flinch every time we come near it," she said. "You did it on the way to the club, and on the way to the gala."
"You noticed."
"I notice everything about you now. It's what I'm for."
I looked at the bridge for a long moment.
"I have to tell you something," I said, "and you won't believe it."
"Try me."
"I died on that bridge."
She did not laugh, and she did not move.
"In another life," I said. "Before my birthday. My father went to prison, and the company failed. Tiffany went with Trent, and two years later I drove into that rail at night."
"At twenty-four."
I stared at her.
"You talk in your sleep," Cosima said. "You said, I'm twenty-four, and the brakes are gone."
"The brakes."
"That's what you said." Her voice was steady, but her eyes were bright. "Perry, was it Trent?"
"I don't know. I will never know."
"No, you won't."
She laid her hand on mine.
"But you woke up on your birthday with a second chance, and the first thing you did with it was hold out your hand to a stranger."
"Cosima."
"I believe you," she said. "I believed it the first time I heard you cry in your sleep. Now drive me across it."
"I can't."
"You can. I'll sit beside you, and I'll look at you the whole way."
She got out and came around the car, and I slid over.
